I apologize for being sick today. We have an incredible opportunity to expand Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PMNM). If you have ever been snorkeling in Ahihi Kina'u you have seen the importance of creating marine protected areas (MPA's) in order to protect marine life and ecosystems.
Nearly 16 years ago I had the chance to visit Midway Atoll and the marine life I saw was beyond anyone who lives in the Main Hawaiian Islands imagination. The fish were masive, the coral was beautiful, and the water was crystal clear. There were hundreds of thousands of albatross doing their mating dances and nurturing their chicks. There are numerous examples of the effectiveness of marine reserves throughout the world. I am asking that we as a class do our part to expand PMNM. If you agree that Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument should be expanded and thoroughly protected please print the attached petition and get as many of your friends and family to sign it by Thursday. (Please bring the petitions to class Thursday so I can give them to my friend by Friday.) Everything needs to be mailed by Monday. Here is the link to the petition: https://drive.google.com/a/kiheicharter.org/file/d/0B9KpngJF4KZAelpZb1dXd3pydzA/view?usp=sharing In addition, we all know how to write letters in support or opposition of something so please write a one page letter to President Obama and Governor Ige about your support or opposition for the expansion of PMNM. This link shows you how to write a business letter: http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plan/persuasive-letter Here is the website to the marine reserve to help you learn more: http://www.papahanaumokuakea.gov/ Due Tuesday April 19th. Find 5 restaurants in Kihei. You need to visit them, take a picture of their restaurant, the types of utensils they use for on site service, and pictures of what they use for their take out and what they use for straws. Reserve Your Restaurant or Food Truck Here Come support Maui Huliau’s environmental education programs for Maui youth & learn about our films, events and student-led projects! A portion of all pizza sales from 5 to 10pm will be generously donated to Maui Huliau's programs.
We will also be celebrating the state-wide launch of Ocean Friendly Restaurants with Surfrider Foundation and other OFR partners, and the certification of Flatbread as one of Mauiʻs first Ocean Friendly Restaurants! Stop by to show your support, and to learn more about OFR and how you can help! Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawaiʻi is a state-wide effort to promote restaurants who help protect our oceans by reducing their use of single-use plastics. OFR Hawaiʻi was modeled after the Ocean Friendly Restaurants campaign started by the San Diego chapter of Surfrider Foundation. OFR Hawaiʻi is a joint effort between the local Hawai’i Chapters of Surfrider Foundation and the Rise Above Plastics Coalition including Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation, Maui Huliau Foundation, Styrophobia, Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi, Conservation Council for Hawaiʻi and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi. To learn more visit: http://www.oceanfriendlyrestaurants.org/ To learn more about Maui Huliau Foundation's programs visit http://www.mauihuliaufoundation.org/ This final quarter we will build on the knowledge of the ocean and the major threats to it by creating a movement using every means at our disposal to protect the oceans and the planet. 1. You must find 5 other non-profit organizations that are fighting to Malama Honua (to take care of our planet). Describe how their websites and social media are set up. What do you like about their websites and the visual aspect of their website. Find three video's, articles, or info-graphs that they posted and distill it. How is it structured? What was the argument? What type of sources did they use to back their argument? 2. Now find 5 issues that affect Maui and our oceans. They could be issues found in the Tedtalk bellow. Explain: 1. What's the source of the problem is? 2. How does it affects the oceans, reefs, or rain forests? 3. You need 3 quality sources to back your claim. 4. What are Hawaiian cultural values that we can use in order to address these issues? 3. We are going to use your issues in order to educate the public about them and find solutions. Design a food web including algae, corals, fish, bacteria, mammals, reptiles, and fungi. Indicate any keystone species and how the coral reef ecosystem would be affected by loosing the species. How does each species affect one another. Are there any symbiotic relationships? Are there examples of co-evolution?
Here is an example from National Geographic. We will be making a coral reef food chain next week. You need to be prepared.
25 pts. Craft a letter to the Nicaraguan President citing the Science Magazine article we red in class today.
