Chemistry provides an overview of conceptual chemistry. Students will learn to interpret the world on an atomic and molecular level. Topics include the central tenets of scientific thought and exploration, experimental design, the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical bonding, chemical equations and reactions, basic stoichiometry, kinetics and equilibrium, oxidation/reduction reactions, acids and bases, the physical behavior of matter, and an introduction to organic chemistry. Although the course emphasizes conceptual chemistry, students are expected to have a basic understanding of Algebra 1. Topics are explored through reading, online assignments, lecture, and student-driven projects. Strong emphasis is placed on hands-on activities and students are expected to be active participants in class discussions and activities. (Prerequisites: Algebra 1)
