Goals & Objectives
This year we will sail the seas as if we were the Polynesian Navigators who consistently sailed the Pacific ahead of their time. We will learn the tools they used in order to navigate and develop amazing scientific feats such as building fish ponds, lo‘i, and a kapu system that protected natural resources. These cultural and spiritual beliefs allowed Hawaiians to provide for a population in Hawai‘i that surpassed a million people. We will compare this vibrant civilization to modern day civilizations and examine traditional practices and modern science that will help us solve issues such as global climate change and ocean acidification, over fishing, and poor land management that are driving ecosystem collapse world wide. We will develop solutions and share them with our broader community so Maui can be a beacon of hope throughout the world.
