In Groups of 3-4 you will make a weather forecast video that describes the state of hurricanes in the Pacific on September 1, 2015. Your job will be to make a short video clip with visuals that explains: 1. what conditions are needed to cause hurricanes, 2. the history of hurricanes in Hawai‘i, 3. the affect global warming and El Nino have had on hurricanes in the Pacific, and 4. things you can do to prepare for a hurricane.
Due Tuesday September 8th. Please submit what you have so far on Hurricanes and Earthquakes via the online portal I created:
http://mrfitzkcs.weebly.com/marine-biology-period-1-homework-submission.html For future reference, you can find this form under the Marine Biology Tab. You will have to upload the document to google-drive in your KCS email and then copy the link location and paste it into the form fill document. Please don't just copy and paste, but put things into your own words. If it is hand written, you can take a picture of all the pages/images you drew and upload the photos. On Thursday we might have a guest lecturer (Hannah Bernard) to talk about Marine Debris and Sea Turtles. She is also looking for volunteers to help with nests that are hatching over the next few weeks/months. I'm hoping we can help her out as a class. If she can't make it, we will be discussing your research on Hurricanes and Tsunamis this Thursday. Stay safe and lets hope the worst of the storm has passed. 1. What conditions are needed for a Hurricanes? How do you think global warming may affect the formation of hurricanes? How will it affect Hawai'i? Find one hurricane that you are interested in and be able to present to the class about it. 2. What causes Tsunamis? Find one tsunami that interests you and be able to present to the class about it. http://weather.hawaii.edu/
Find 15 major historical events that occurred from the big bang to the present. When did they happen? What happened? Why did it happen?
For 8 of the events draw a picture that depicts the event. Some examples are: The big bang, the oceans formed, the atmosphere became Oxygenated, Pangea broke up, the Himalayas were formed...... Have a great weekend! Research as much as you can about plate tectonics. Some questions you may want to ask are:
Who was the scientist that proposed the hypothesis in the early 1900's. How was his ideas accepted. What evidence is there for plate tectonics? What are the various types of plate boundaries? What is a hot spot? How are the Hawai‘ian islands formed and what is the progression of the Hawai‘ian islands? What are the various layers of the earth & how do we know what they are likely made of? What is the difference between isostatic and eustatic sea level change? |
