1. How are sea birds used for Hawaiian Navigation?
2. How are sea birds tracked and monitored?
Here is a link to sea bird tracking: http://www.werc.usgs.gov/ProjectSubWebPage.aspx?SubWebPageID=3&ProjectID=254
Here is a link to one of my friends papers on Albatross
You may want to include one of these images. If you were doing a publication you would contact the authors and ask permission to use the image/figure.
3. What are the major threats to seabirds? (May want to include pictures) pictures must be labelled figure as well as any graphs you create. Data table are labeled Table.
4. What sea birds reside in Hawaii? Are any sea birds endemic to Hawai'i? What is their Hawaiian Name, Common Name, and Scientific name (Scientific name Genus and species are always italicized)
5. Include a picture for each!
6. Are there different hunting strategies of sea birds? How do sea birds control homeostasis? How do they get fresh water?
7. Do fossil fuels, climate change, and ocean acidification affect sea birds. Explain and site your sources.
The following will each have all four species in one graph. (Use the Hawaiian names for the birds)
Under each graph you will need to describe the figure in the following way.
Example
Figure 1. Hawaiian Sea Bird Populations on Maui, in Hawaii, and throughout the world from largest population on the right to smallest population on the left.
How to make a graph Movie
1. Create a bar graph showing their population on Maui, in Hawaii, and World Wide. When data is not available it does not need to be included.
2. Create a bar graph or scatter plot indicating how far each of the species travels.
3. Create a bar graph indicating when each of the species is nesting.
Which seabirds migrate extremely far and which ones stay close? Based on the graph, which species tell Hawaiian Navigators they are getting close to land and why?
What was most interesting to your group? Did you learn anything new?
